Grace Grantham and Elizabeth Star, friends through Hands and Hearts

“Neighborly” volunteers needed in program

Grace Grantham is a vibrant young woman who has cerebral palsy. You very likely have seen her moving about town on her scooter. This mode of transportation works for Grace when the sun is shining but is no fun when it rains. Grace came to Hearts and Hands asking for a volunteer to help her with transportation to physical therapy. Volunteer Elizabeth Star readily accepted Grace as her care recipient. Grace comments, “We have lots of laughs. Having Elizabeth as my volunteer has started a wonderful friendship. As we have begun to know each other better we do more things together. We have become very close; Elizabeth is a perfect friend. Without her, who would I have to tease?”

Many people, when thinking of Hearts and Hands, first consider what service they might provide. It’s a joyful revelation for a volunteer to learn they receive as much as they give. Elizabeth reflects, “Being a volunteer has given me the opportunity to get to know Grace and I laugh a lot. I have learned so much from Grace. I feel as if I am paying my dues ahead of time. I know the time will come where I will need to ask for help.”

Presently Hearts and Hands is in the position of needing more volunteers. We have several people waiting to receive their special person. Generally a volunteer spends one to three hours a week providing services such as a friendly visit, in-town transportation to medical appointments or for errand and shopping.
