2015 Great Islands Clean Up

The Exchange is coordinating Orcas Island’s participation in the 3rd annual Great Islands Clean Up. This is a county-wide greening event where on April 23 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. volunteers from Orcas Island (as well as volunteers on San Juan and Lopez) will clean the public beaches and roadways of litter. The goal is to be “litter free by the sea!” Last year, on Orcas Island alone, about 65 volunteers cleared more than one ton of garbage and recyclables from public areas.

The community is very excited for this year’s clean up and has come together to provide lots of rewards and volunteer incentives to show gratitude to each volunteer for dedicating their Saturday morning in April to help.

While the Eastsound Village Green will act as the headquartered checkpoint, this year there will also be a few more check points than last year. This will help to create better coverage of the island. All litter from any checkpoint will be brought to Eastsound Village Green by 1 p.m. to be sorted for recyclables and weighed.

Please participate in the Great Islands Clean Up on April 23 by checking in at the following location of your choice at 9 a.m. The Exchange will provide safety gear and supplies.

Deer Harbor: Deer Harbor Community Center
Doe Bay: Upper parking lot/Homestead Road
Eastsound: The Village Green
Olga: Artworks
Orcas Village: Post Office
Rosario: Palisades Tennis Courts
West Sound: Yacht Club
