Ashanti started working at The Funhouse just as COVID hit. At that time we were pivoting from our Afterschool programming to helping elementary school kids with remote schooling. She’s been with us every step of the way and now is an integral part of our Afterschool Program once again.

“There is such an enormous amount of support here at The Funhouse. The staff really works hard at lifting each other up and supporting each other. It’s beautiful being here and seeing that every interaction is important, empowering kids and yourself through empathy and compassion,” says Ashanti.

“Adults don’t get a lot of time to play and be free. When I’m here I get to do that. I’ve always wanted to work with children. From a very young age, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. It’s important to me to let my inner child be happy, free and at peace. I love talking to the kids and learning from them. It teaches me about tuning in and being present in the moment,” she added. Loretta agrees that her friend Ashanti is a great listener, always paying attention to her, watching her dance & draw. “She makes me feel important,” said Loretta.

Loretta, a 5th grader at Orcas Elementary attends The Funhouse Afterschool Program and adores Ashanti. “She is sweet and kind. Sometimes when I don’t have anyone to connect with, Ashanti is always there for me. She’s also very good at drawing, talking with me, and telling stories.”

Loretta also expressed that her favorite part of The Funhouse is “That it’s a very open space where kids can talk about anything and not be scared.”

Ashanti enjoys hanging out with her friend Loretta as well as all of the other children in the Afterschool Program. “When I’m here, at The Funhouse, I feel inspired,” said Ashanti. “Working at The Funhouse is the most rewarding job experience I’ve ever had!”
