Orcas Peer Mentors Celebrate the Holidays

With the holidays upon us Orcas teenagers have wasted no time in finding ways to celebrate. This year The Funhouse Commons partnered again with the Orcas Island School District to offer our peer mentoring program. Every week high school mentors meet with their middle school mentees to form one on one growth focused relationships. Pairs play games together, and chat about their lives, the challenges of teenage life on Orcas, and how to develop important life skills for high school and adulthood.

To celebrate the end of the year and the commitment that these youth have made to one another we hosted two festive events this month. On a sleepy Saturday morning youth pulled themselves out of bed to come to The Funhouse and share breakfast, listen to classic holiday tunes, and to decorate gingerbread houses together. A few days later, our group met in the school’s culinary arts classroom for a holiday cookie bake off. Mentor-mentee teams worked together on self-chosen recipes which resulted in a half dozen varieties of delectable treats which were gobbled up faster than you could imagine. Coconut macaroons, icing decorated sugar cookies, sunflower butter cookies, and snickerdoodles were some of our tasty creations.

Our teenaged mentors and mentees are excited to continue deepening their relationships and having fun together in the coming year. Happy holidays!
