Zane Youngren & Mack Shane hold up the "solar death ray."

By Krista Bouchey

Saturday August 6, The Funhouse is hosting its first annual “EcoFest.” Looking to expand upon the success of the annual school science fair, EcoFest is a science-based event celebrating local sustainability, renewable energy and island eco-living.

There will be booths and exhibits featuring local groups and businesses promoting home energy efficiency and conservation services, electric and hybrid vehicles, renewable energy systems, creative re-use and recycling, local food production and eco-tourism.

Local experts will present short educational lectures and demonstrations throughout the day in the new Funhouse community classroom space. Everyone who comes will have an opportunity to participate in a sustainable vision project for imagining the future of Orcas Island.

An outdoor stage will feature live music and performances, and The Funhouse’s new  “solar death-ray” will cook hot dogs for attendees.

Hands-on activities will engage kids and adults alike, including a sewing project that incorporates repurposed clothes, making solar cooking stoves and demonstrations of “upcycling” computers and electronics.

Learn how you can be more sustainable and efficient in your life, or share your unique sustainability efforts—The Funhouse is still accepting proposals for displays, presentations and examples of eco-living.

The Eco Fest is from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, August 6 at The Funhouse.
