Don’t miss soprano Renee Fleming– fresh from her Super Bowl performance of the national anthem – in the role that made her a star. She sings opposite Piotr Beczala (Rigoletto) in Rusalka, Dvorak’s sumptuously melodic fairy-tale opera streaming Live from the Met in HD to Orcas Center this Sunday, February 9th at 1:00 pm.

National Medal of the Arts and four-time Grammy Award winner Renée Fleming, made history this Sunday exposing millions of people to opera,. As the first opera singer to ever perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl, she was named ABC Nightly News “Person of the Week,” and was featured on “The View” earlier this week.

The story of the opera, which is about a water spirit’s tragic romance with a human prince, is drawn from several folktale sources including Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. Star conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads a cast that also includes Piotr Beczala as the handsome Prince who yearns to love Rusalka. Fleming won the Met’s National Council Auditions 25 years ago singing the forlorn mermaid’s famous aria Song to the Moon and has sung the role of Rusalka more than any other artist in Met history.

“Renee Fleming owns just about every role she has ever sung… and none more than Rusalka.” Huffington Post

Running time: approximately 4 hours. Host: Susan Graham

Tickets for this Met Live in HD presentation of Rusalka are $18, $13 for students, $2 off for Orcas Center members, and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from noon – 4 pm.
