San Juan County residents of ALL AGES are encouraged to submit your best original poems to the 2023 POETRY GARDEN CONTEST. Winning entries will be displayed in the town’s four Poetry Gardens! Deadline for submission: October 31, 2022.
- GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
- No submission fee.
- Any form of poetry accepted (e.g., free verse, prose, rhyme, haiku, lyric).
- Author must be a resident of San Juan County, WA, and poems must be their original work. Poems may have been previously published.
- Poems must be appropriate for display in a public space for viewing by all ages.
- Poems may be no longer than 20 lines, 10 words per line. Short poems encouraged.
- Up to five entries allowed, but only two poems per author may be selected. Include 1) cover letter listing titles of enclosed poems and the author’s name, mailing address, phone number, email, and grade (if in school); and 2) two copies of each poem typed on 8 1⁄2 x 11 inch paper in 12 pt. font. Name of author must not appear on the same page as the poem.

By submitting your poetry, all contest winners agree to the public display and publication of their work. The 30 winning entries will be announced in February 2023. Selected poems will be professionally engraved on plaques and displayed in one of four gardens located in the town of Friday Harbor for a period of three years. Winning authors will receive a book of the winning poems. Additional copies of the book will be available to the public at various locations throughout the islands.
