Saturday, June 8, 11 a.m., Masonic Hall in Friday Harbor
— from Gregory Hancock —
The San Juan County Amateur Radio Society will be hosting a free amateur radio (“ham radio”) license exam on June 8 at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Hall in Friday Harbor, 15 Second Street North. Please obtain an FCC registration number (FRN) prior to the exam, and come with a valid government-issued photo ID. All ages welcome. If you plan to take the ferry that arrives at 11:15, please contact the club ahead of time to make arrangements for starting the exam late.
Amateur radio is a fun and interesting hobby for anyone with curiosity about science and a desire to help the community by providing voice and data communications capability during disasters. Morse code proficiency is no longer required for any license levels. Excellent self-paced training resources are available at www.arrl.org.
For more information, contact the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society through their web site at www.sjcars.org. Local volunteer mentors are available to help you with studying and getting familiar with amateur radio.
