Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Library

“Four Russian Poets:A Poetry Reading and Discussion by John Friedmann” is the topic for this month’s Writers Roundtable. All are welcome!

This reading will introduce four of the most important Russian poets whose work falls into the first half of the 20th century: Vladimir Mayakovsky (1894-1830), Ossip Mandelstam (1892-1938), Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1942), and Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966). Brief summaries of their lives will be followed by substantial selections of their poetry in translation.

After nearly three decades of teaching urban planning at UCLA, John Friedmann has had an honorary appointment with the School of Community and Regional Planning at UBC-Vancouver since 2001. Since then, his research has focused on planning theory and urbanization in China. His recent book publications include The Prospect of Cities (2002), China’s Urban Transition (2005), and Insurgencies: Essays in Planning Theory (2011). He and his wife, Leonie Sandercock, live part-time on Orcas Island.
