Its that time again! Orcas Food Co-op and Food Masters bring you a Seaweed Ramble with Dr. Ryan Drum. The lowest tides of the year are upon us and it is time to grab our boots and our sun hats and head out to the beach!

Come walk with Dr. Ryan Drum and glean from his vast knowledge of the full gamut of sea vegetables that populate our shorelines.

LOGISTICS:
We’ll leave the Main (North) Parking Lot at Camp Orkila at 11AM so we can head to the beach as a group. If you come late, you can find us down on the beach.

WHAT WILL BE COVERED:

  • Identification of various species of Seaweed;
  • Methods of harvesting, processing and storing sea vegetables for year round use;
  • Important medicinal and protective qualities of sea vegetables;
  • Many, many fascinating facts about Sea Vegetables and their many uses;
  • Ryan Drum will try to answer as many questions as possible.

What to bring: Please be on time and be prepared for a day at the Camp Orkila Beach. Bring water, sturdy sandals or rubber boots if possible, snacks, any personal comfort items you may need such as sun hat, appropriate clothing, sun screen etc.).

If you wish to harvest seaweed to take home (optional):
• obtain a seaweed/shellfish harvesting license online or from the sporting goods store in Eastbound.
• bring a bucket, several plastic bags, and a small knife
