Hopefully this will serve as a lesson for future Charter Review Commissions. No doubt those folks poured countless hours into researching well intentioned proposals, but the majority of what they proposed was well outside the scope of what that body should have been engaging with and now all of their hard work was essentially for nothing.
When it comes to questions of governing, the CRC is supposed to tackle the how not the what. If you have an issue you want our local government to address then advocate for it to the Council directly and advocate for electeds that will go to bat for that issue. Trying to address those items through the CRC was a mistake.
The CRC never defined the problems it was trying to solve or why those problems could not be addressed through our current governmental structure. Mostly just proposed more layers of bureaucracy. I’m glad the County voters saw through these propositions. Maybe the next CRC will take more time to actually try to understand how our local government works and propose sensible changes to it’s structure that might lead to real change instead of feel good proposals that don’t actually do anything.
