||| FROM SAN JUAN COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS |||

As of July 10, 2024, at 1:00pm, Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued a declaration banning all fires statewide on DNR protected lands. This ban extends to recreational campfires on DNR lands in San Juan County.

Q: What are DNR protected Lands?

A: WA State Parks (ex: Moran State Park, Obstruction Pass State Park, Lime Kiln Point State Park, and Spencer Spit State Park), Designated Forest Land, any land owned by WA State, and protected shorelines.

Q: What does this mean for San Juan County?

A: Open flames are banned on all DNR protected lands.  San Juan County residents with properties not in a forest land area are allowed to have a recreational campfire in an approved pit.

Your San Juan County Fire Chiefs and Fire Marshal are evaluating the weather and fire danger levels moving forward. Through this last heat wave, San Juan County has maintained relative humidity in the low 60% range with fuel moisture recovering at night.

Please note: any remote island not within an established Fire District, falls under WA DNR’s declaration of a burn ban.

Next stages:

If a RED FLAG WARNING is issued for San Juan County, recreational fires are prohibited until the RED FLAG WARNING is over.

Any questions about this declaration should be submitted to Fire Marshal Chad Kimple at (360)378-3473, or email at firemarshal@sanjuanco.com.
