The Orcas Island Garden Club presents Fire-Smart Landscaping for Western Washington by Marlene Finley

Please join the Orcas Island Garden Club on Wednesday, November 12th when we welcome Marlene Finley to speak about Fire-Smart Landscaping for Western Washington.

Despite its wet reputation, Western Washington is no longer immune from wildfire. Prolonged dry spells mean higher fire danger in our region. Learn what you can do to protect your home and garden from wildfire. Marlene Finley will share practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of burning embers igniting your home, outbuildings or garden landscape. Regular home and garden maintenance practices can be life savers. While no plants are “fire resistant”, some plants are more flammable than others. Plant lists, additional handouts and resources will be available.

Marlene Finley is past President of WSU Skagit County Master Gardener Foundation and lives in Anacortes. After years of working as a forest manager for the US Forest Service and a park ranger for the National Park Service, Marlene has first-hand experience working on wildland fires, supporting large scale fuel reduction projects and participating in prescribed burns. Now as a home gardener, Marlene applies this knowledge in her own garden and shares lessons learned as well as emerging science.

The presentation will also be available via Zoom. For a link to the live Zoom presentation, please visit the Orcas Island Garden Club Events and click the link below the list of presentations. The presentation will be recorded. To watch the recorded presentation, hover your cursor over Events and select Recorded Presentations. Please note that the recording will only be available to view for four weeks after it is posted. Garden club presentations are free and open to the public.
