Orcas Island Fire and Rescue is committed to safely transporting patients to the most appropriate care facility by the most suitable transportation mode. Fortunately, we have a variety of options that we can use to transport patients to hospitals off the island including Airlift Northwest, San Juan Medivac, the Sheriff’s Boat, US Navy, US Coast Guard, Homeland Security, Vessel Assist, Washington State Ferries, or private vehicle. Every transport decision is made conscientiously based on the following criteria:
1. Safety
2. Medical necessity
3. Transport mode availability
4. Weather
5. Membership

We recognize there is confusion regarding the services of Airlift Northwest and San Juan Medivac. OIFR always has and always will make medical transportation decisions based on your immediate medical needs with the goal to gain the best outcome. This is a commitment we make to all Orcas citizens and visitors, regardless of insurance coverage or memberships.

To address this issue, Orcas Island Fire and Rescue will host a community forum on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, 5:30 p.m., at the Headquarters Fire Station in Eastsound to provide you with accurate information regarding EMS transport while listening to your concerns.

To access membership information about Airlift Northwest and San Juan MedEvac go to our website www.orcasfire.org select public services, then click on Aeromedical Services. Additional information is available in the lobby of the Headquarters Fire Station in Eastsound.
