— from Patricia Ayers, OIFR —
At approximately 12:47 am on Wednesday, June 25, Orcas Firefighters responded to the Lover’s Lane neighborhood for a report of a fire in an apartment. Arriving responders found heavy smoke and embers smoldering in the apartment’s kitchen. Tenants and neighbors used fire extinguishers to keep the fire contained within the one apartment.
Tenants from the involved apartment and neighboring ones were able to escape uninjured. Three people were evaluated for smoke inhalation; no treatment was needed.
It took 14 responders about 8 minutes to completely put the fire out. OIFR and San Juan County Fire Marshal determined that the fire was accidental in nature.
OIFR reminds you to make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home. If you need one, they are free to the public at Station 21 in Eastsound.
Take care and have a safe summer!
