The Board of Fire Commissioners, Orcas Island is currently accepting applications for Fire Commissioner. Following the resignation of Commissioner Bedell, the Fire Commission must appoint a new Commissioner. Bedell vacated her seat following 10 years of service to the Department and community.

As a correction to the previously released information, the selected Commissioner will serve until a special election to be held in November 2019. Whomever is elected at that time will then serve for the remainder of Bedell’s original six year term, which ends January 1, 2024. The Board of Fire Commissioners is responsible for: (1) Determining levels of service and establishing goals, (2) Determining type and level of funding, approve budgets, tax levies, (3) Establishing policies and approve operational procedures, (4) Guiding strategic planning, (5) Employing key personnel, supervising chief and (6) Representing the District to the budget. Commissioners meet at a general meeting one time per month and as needed for other committees and functions.
