Candidates considering a 2009 run for office in San Juan County can file by mail beginning Friday, May 15. A total of 40 offices will appear on the November 3rd ballot including Friday Harbor Town Mayor and Council seats, and offices in school, fire protection, hospital, sewer, water, hospital and other districts.

To qualify, the prospective candidate must be a registered voter in San Juan County and be a resident of the district represented.

The County Elections Office will accept in-person filings beginning June 1, 2009, at 8 a.m. The deadline for both filing in person and by mail is 4:30 p.m. Friday June 5, 2009.  Candidate packets are available online at https://wei.secst=ate.wa.gov/sanjuan/Pages/default.aspx
or at the San Juan County Elections Office located at 55 2nd Street, Friday Harbor.

Orcas Island elective offices that are currently open for filing are:

3 Orcas Island School District board members (Current members Tony Ghazel, Charlie Glasser and Scott Lancaster’s terms expire this year.)

2 Fire Commissioner terms (one full term, one unexpired term)

3 Port of Orcas Commissioners (full term)

1 Orcas Cemetery Commissioner (full term)

2 Eastsound Water and Sewer District Commissioners (full term)

If more than two persons file for any one of these non partisan offices, a Primary will be held for that office on Tuesday, August 18, 2009.

The names of the two persons receiving the most votes for that position will be placed on the General Election ballot. Interested parties may call the Elections Office at 378-3357 with their questions.
