Delicious Shepherd’s pie, kale salad, homemade roll and applesauce! Apples and pears from Ed Suij.

— by Ashley Randall —

On October 5th, the WSDA Farm to School and the Washington School Nutrition Association partnered to sponsor “Taste Washington Day,” an annual celebration of Washington grown foods served in school meals. The Orcas Island School District was one of forty districts signed up to participate in the event. Debbie, our public school’s Food Service Director, procured produce and meat from seven local farms. Chef Zach and Bing then prepared a delicious autumnal meal for our students and staff to enjoy.

On the menu: Shepherd’s pie made with Jones Family Farms beef and Orcasong Farm potatoes, kale salad, homemade rolls cooked from scratch by Bing Mowrey, and homemade applesauce made by Chef Zach Holley from local apples. The salad bar was stocked full with organic vegetables from Morning Star, Taproot, Maple Rock, Orcasong, and a variety of apples and pears from Ed Suij of Smiling Dog!

Morning Star: salad greens, beets & carrots. Maple Rock Farm: broccoli & arugula. Orcassong: cucumbers, beets & radishes. Taproot Farm: sun gold tomatoes.

Quality meals like this are generously prepared for our students on a regular basis, yet it was fun to feast knowing we were celebrating local eats alongside schools throughout Washington State. Thank you to our dedicated cafeteria staff and Orcas farmers for working together to provide our island students with another great meal!
