Tom Burg – salmon smoker extraordinaire

by Madie Murray

On Monday, the 21st, Tom Burg delivered almost 30 pounds of freshly smoked salmon to the school cafeteria for our school lunches!  Are we lucky or what??   The salmon was supplied by the Glenwood Springs Hatchery, and the smoking was all Burg!  The smoked salmon will be used in quiches, on salads and in pastas.   Tom has also sharpened our cafeteria kitchen knives for us several times. Thanks so much, Tom!

Speaking of school lunches, Check out the School District Facebook page for absolutely delicious photos of recent school lunches taken by our MS/HS Principal, Kyle Freeman.  The meals also include a trip to the salad bar and a beverage – all for the amazing sum of $5.00 for adults!  Community welcome.  Just check in at the District office or Elementary School office first.

A big thanks to all who helped make it happen!

We now have a beautiful, protective cover over the rebuilt cob oven in the school garden.  It was a cooperative effort between Lowe’s, from whom we purchased the materials and two of their employees (Mark Carpenter and David Long) who volunteered their time to set the posts for us before they returned to the mainland; and several community members:  David Adrian, Rollie Sauer, David Turnoy, Tyler Jensen, Bill Pollock and Learner Limbach.   Soon, there will be wooden benches in front so the area may be used for talks, garden gatherings or pizza parties in the summertime.   The oven will also be used as a teaching tool on making and baking the old-fashioned way.  Imagine…growing wheat in the garden, milling grains in the classroom and turning it into bread from the cob oven.  It doesn’t get much better than that!  The money for the materials was made available to us through a grant from Whole Foods Foundation and Lowe’s C & E Foundation.  You may watch a slide show on the building of the shed and starting the cob oven for the first time by clicking here.

At the Bullock’s plant sale recently, three generous people donated plants (including a fig tree) to the school garden, and the Bullocks graciously added several more to the mix!  Our garden and our schools thanks you, one and all.   Also, We were honored to be able to pick and deliver to the school cafeteria another lovely batch of healthy Orcas apples from Bob and Phyllis Henigson’s orchard.

And, don’t forget to check out our “Edible Eats and Education” fundraiser!  We’re off to a great start, but have a considerable way to go before we reach our goal and make our tomato red!  Please promote it to your friends and family and share it on facebook, twitter, or word of mouth.   We need YOU to make it happen!  Every dollar donated on the site will be worth TWO because it will be matched by a private group of community donors up to our goal of $11,000!
