||| FROM EASTSOUND PLANNING REVIEW COMMITTEE |||
In case you didn’t see it on the County calendar, the Eastsound Planning Review Committee will host a special meeting with discussion of updating Exterior Lighting regulations in Eastsound. We will revisit the public outreach done so far and discuss how to keep the spirit of our current regulations while following the best lighting practices that the IDA International Dark Skies Association uses to prevent light pollution and light trespassing. Lopez Village successfully updated their exterior lighting regulations to IDA standards in 2019. All are welcome.

How about Orcas village implements the Dark Skies protocol? The new eye burning street lights are horrible! At the very least, put them on timers or motion sensors. Funny how “improvements” always seem to consist of more impermeable concrete surfaces and more unnecessary and ecologically damaging lights. I guess they will stop when everywhere looks like a parking lot? Reminds me of a certain Joni Mitchell song. . . .
Hi Ken, The updated regulations are absolutely IDA International Dark Sky compliant, And, actually the new street lights are Dark Skies compliant, too, and have the very lowest B>U>G> (Brightness, Uplight, and Glare) rating of any commercially available street lights, They are the least intrusive lights that served the purpose of providing pedestrian lighting at intersections so that cars can see those crossing the street.
We would love you input at the meeting if you are available!
