From the Friends of the San Juans
Attend the November 3 San Juan County EIS Scoping Hearing for the Gateway Pacific Terminal (GPT) 12-3 p.m., Friday Harbor High School, 45 Blair Ave, Friday Harbor.
The San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea will be at the center of the marine impacts resulting from increased shipping of coal exports. Concerned citizens will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed project at San Juan County’s public scoping hearing on November 3.
Comments made at this official session or submitted in writing during the scoping period will help inform the type and the geographic scope of impacts to be included in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The EIS is the key document for the various agencies and individuals involved with approving or denying permits, permissions and/or leases for the project.
For more information about the issue and how to craft effective scoping comments, visit www.sanjuans.org or contact Katie Fleming at 360.378.2319 or Katie@sanjuans.org

Thanks to all the Islanders who took the time on Saturday to come out to learn about & comment on the issues surrounding the Gateway Pacific Terminal project. A big pat on the back should go out to Friends of the San Juans and Katie Fleming for getting so many folks (over 400) out to the EIS Scoping meeting. The quality of the comments were excellent. If you didn’t make it but still want to comment, there are several more meetings on the mainland and you can submit written comments online or via mail until January 21, 2013. The most effective comments are those that follow the format linked in the original article and you can submit as many comments as you wish.
