Warm homes. Good food. Help in need. Services for seniors. And, for students, a chance to learn to fly. These are the gifts to Orcas islanders from shoppers at July’s Market Day, the annual rummage sale of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. From the proceeds, Emmanuel has donated $1,150 each to OPALCO’s Project Pal, the Orcas Island Food Bank, the Orcas Community Resource Center, Orcas Senior Center, and to the Air Hawks Flying Club for high school students’ flying lessons.
“Market Day is an Orcas tradition that works for everyone,” said Emmanuel’s rector, Berto Gandara. “Shoppers get great deals; donors know their items will be appreciated; and the money goes to good use on Orcas. We’re grateful to all the people who come and buy, those who donate items, and our parishioners, who make it all happen.”
Emmanuel has held Market Day annually since 1940. Established in 1885, Emmanuel offers use of its buildings to Orcas nonprofits without charge for special events. The balance of Market Day funds help maintain these facilities.
