From the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce
“Celebrate Orcas Farms” is the theme for the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Community Parade scheduled for Saturday, July 7 in Eastsound. “Our island is made up of beautiful landscapes, including farms of all types that help sustain us. Though Farms and Agritourism are growing as tourist interests, farming on Orcas Island has been a part of life of this island for many years. Orcas farmers have created a bountiful harvest on the island, and it’s hard to think of a more perfect moment for all of us to ‘celebrate our farms’ than our Community Parade, said Lance Evans, Chamber Executive Director.
The Chamber is thrilled to announce that Emily Reid will serve as Grand Marshal of the Community Parade. Emily is an islander for over 50 years, and grew up in Eastern Washington, where the family worked as both wheat farmers and cattle ranchers. Her passion is gardening and all things floral, as evidenced by her many awards throughout the years. She stays up on local agriculture, and expresses her love for today’s farm in noting, “they are the heart & soul of the island.”
“Participation in the parade is open to any Orcas group,” said Evans, “and we particularly hope that the parade attracts a wide range of residents who lover our farms this year. The Chamber of Commerce – with the sponsorship of Island Market – is offering a $100 cash prize and two $50 Island Market gift certificates for the top three entries that most uniquely captures the theme of the parade. Visitors and residents alike are invited to enjoy the parade on North Beach Road and Main Street in Eastsound starting at 11 am on Saturday, July 7.
Parade entry forms are available at the Chamber office, on the Chamber website, and at The Office Cupboard. The Chamber is asking for a $20 entry fee (per group regardless of number of people). 100% of this fee will go towards the fireworks display in Eastsound on Wednesday, July 4. The entry deadline for the parade is Saturday, June 30.
Also, the familiar fireworks donation containers will be located at various island merchants, and spare change (or more) is appreciated to help pay for the fireworks.
