I’ve long been aware that one of the best excuses on Orcas for not getting something done, for not being where I was expected, for not meeting a deadline is “I was off island.”

Not only does that cover the actual time that you were off island, visiting the mainland, but if you whine enough, it can get you an additional day of recovery that anyone who has ever been off island will immediately understand.

I recently learned there is also another way, although perhaps not at all pleasant — and ultimately expensive, costing nearly as much as purchasing a new car. Only you don’t come home with a snazzy new ride.

“I was flown off” is, hands-down, the best excuse ever. Even if it’s a precautionary flight, as mine was last week, it’s gotten me off the hook for a couple of things, including editorial deadlines.

Much gratitude, of course to the Orcas  Fire medical responders and the Airlift Northwest flight crew.

Fortunately, I am pretty much fine and have milked this for all I can. Back to work…
