Sustainable Trades Program for Kids Offered by EDC, 4-H, and Partners

San Juan County kids are invited to learn about trades careers and sustainability through free, fun projects organized by the Economic Development Council (EDC) and WSU Extension’s San Juan County 4-H Program. OPALCO, the Conservation District, and Rainshadow Solar will be introducing projects on electrical utilities, soil testing and forestry, and solar power in late July through early October.
This program will be free and is open to all San Juan County kids. These activities are geared toward 11 to 14 year old kids, and each has space for up to 10 people. Kids can sign up to participate in one, two, or all three projects. To register a child, parents may contact Wendy Waxman Kern, the 4-H Coordinator for San Juan County WSU Extension, wendy.waxman@wsu.edu.
Kids will do their real-world projects at home or in the community and talk with professionals in the field in three to four online sessions to introduce, troubleshoot, and review the project.
The Conservation District will introduce trades related to conservation with a soil testing project (July 15 and Aug 24 and 26 at 4PM). OPALCO will be doing a virtual tour of a substation, demo transformer maintenance, and introduce GIS (July 20, 22, and 29, and Aug. 12 at 1PM). Kids will assemble a small generator kit and do a mapping project. Rainshadow Solar will guide kids through a site assessment for solar power generation (Sep. 23 and 30, and Oct 7 at 4PM).
