The Orcas Island Writers Festival will sponsor a Celebration of African-American Literature on the last Tuesday of the month for three months.

Barbara Lewis, Director of the Writers Festival, says “Join us for three evenings of food and conversation as we examine the work of three great American writers: Edward P. Jones, Ernest Gaines, and Zora Neale Hurston.”

Lewis and Michele Griskey will lead this class, which will meet at Emmanuel Church on the last Tuesday of each month from February through April from 5:30-8:30 p.m. They will also host a pot luck dinner each month. “The first dinner will be on us!” the two women say.

The fee for all three classes is $35. Register at the Orcas Island Library.

Class Schedule: Feb 24, Edward P. Jones: The Known World, winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize.

March 31, Ernest J. Gaines: A Lesson Before Dying, winner of the National Book Critics Award and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

April 28, Zora Neale Hurston: Their Eyes Were Watching God, also scheduled to be featured by The Big Read, a one-book community reading program sponsored by the Orcas Island Library.

Books will be available for purchase at Darvill’s Bookstore. Participants are encouraged to read the books before the class meetings. Questions can be directed to Michele Griskey at griskey@centurytel.net or 376-3848.
