Kids are encouraged to join in fun and educational activities on Earth Day. Start in the Storytelling Room in Benson Hall at 10am, come enjoy eco-theme stories read by Orcas Children’s Librarian and Wildlife Biologist Jenny DeGroot, followed by more stories read by Caleb Summers a professional reader on Audible. (Parents are welcome to step into the chapel next door for the morning literature readings that
also begin at 10am or enjoy art and music in the Parish Hall).
Arts for Kids happens throughout the day, 10-2, at different tables with printmaking and more. Catch the lively eco-folk music by Irthlingz on the lawn at 11:30. Fill the day with hands-on crafts, touring the Eco Fair exhibits, and be sure to reserve a wildlife guide and head down to the tidal flats with Tina Whitmire, scientists from Friends of the San Juans for a rare mid-day, minus 1.3 low tide adventure.
(Note: Kwiaht will be out on Indian Island doing their annual ecology survey so you’ll see citizen science in action. Please do not crowd the island and be sure to protect wildlife wherever you are.)
Tide walks at 11am and 1pm with naturalists meet up at Labyrinth at the BASE CAMP table at 11 and 1. Please reserve space in advance to get your free laminated tidal guides provided by Sea Doc, with free Salish Sea bioregion maps by WWU Salish Sea Atlas and Kwiaht materials.
Sign-ups for tide walk and laminated guide are at https://earthdaylowtide.eventbrite.com. Hands on crafts table and science table activities – plus learn about pollinators and native plants.
Bring your own lunch to enjoy on the grounds, at the beach, or at Waterfront Park. Learn more about Earth Day events at sanjuanmakersguild.com/eday23/.
