ANACORTES — Island Hospital welcomed Mark Donovan, MD, FACS to Island Surgeons this week. Donovan comes with more than a decade of experience as a general surgeon, most recently at Centennial Medical Group in Roseburg, Oregon. A graduate of Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, Donovan is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Donovan spent four years as a Major in the US Army Medical Corps, serving as Staff Surgeon in both Afghanistan and Northern Syria.

A former engineer, Donovan decided to go into medicine when he realized it would allow him to continue solving problems but with a much more important human connection. He says the decision to undergo surgery is often very personal as patient has unique priorities and circumstances.

“My foremost goal is to educate patients and help them understand the pros and cons of their decisions about surgery,” said Donovan.

Island Hospital CEO Charles Hall, MSN, MBA says, “It’s a huge win to add Donovan’s expertise to our team.”

Outside of surgical work, Donovan and his wife love growing their own food and are particularly interested in permaculture. “It teaches us that growing food, and living in general, is best done in harmony with nature rather than in opposition to it,” he said.

The couple have two young children and are looking forward to raising them in Anacortes where opportunities to learn about their environment will be rich and boundless.
