August 3, 7:30 p.m., Orcas Center
THE MET: LIVE IN HD’s final opera of the summer Encore Series is Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.
Nathaniel Merrill’s production of Strauss’s comic masterpiece of love and intrigue in 18th-century Vienna stars Renée Fleming as the aristocratic Marschallin and Susan Graham in the trouser role of her young lover.
“The Met’s production of Der Rosenkavalier still arouses gasps from audience members as the curtain rises on each set – and laughter at appropriate moments – and tears at others.” —Opera Today
“Ms. Fleming’s vocally captivating performance was daringly subtle. You are pulled in by the expressive nuances of her singing and the multiple meanings she uncovers in the character’s sadly wise words. You will probably not find a better-acted Marschallin.” —The New York Times
Tickets for Der Rosenkavalier are $15 for adults and $11 for students ($2 off for Orcas Center members) and may be purchased on the website at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office during box office hours which are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon- 4 pm. Unfortunately, my wife and I won’t be able to see this replay, but we were privileged to see it live. It is a wonderful production, wonderfully sung and acted by Fleming and Graham. If you only go to see one HD Met opera this year, make it Der Rosenkavalier.
