A lot of Orcas Islanders have said they’d love to be in a book club—but finding the time, or finding one that’s accepting new members, can be a challenge. Darvill’s Bookstore has found a solution to both: the launch of their first-ever Drop-In Book Club, with a theme that feels just right for these times—Love & Relationships.
Now on its third book, the group has already built a loyal (and laughter-filled) following, gathering to discuss novels about love in all its many forms.
“We wanted to make this low-commitment and truly welcoming,” says author and co-facilitator Ayn Gailey, who leads the group alongside Darvill’s owner Sara Farish. “In these times, when so much feels uncertain or heavy, it’s comforting to gather around stories of human connection, humor, and hope.”
So far, the club has read Emily Henry’s newest novel and Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The tone is a mix of commercial literary fiction and romantic comedy—books that are smart, emotionally resonant, and fun to talk about. The group, which has been mostly made up of thoughtful, hilarious women (and one very lucky man), meets monthly inside cozy Darvill’s, after store hours, surrounded by books.
Here’s what’s up next:
October Pick: Thank You for Listening by Julia Whelan
A whip-smart, big-hearted rom-com by one of the most beloved audiobook narrators in the country. Expect witty banter, touching moments, and a love story with unexpected depth.
Discussion: Sunday, October 12 at 5:00 PM at Darvill’s
November Pick: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
A sweeping, emotionally powerful novel about friendship, creativity, and all kinds of love. Recently named one of the New York Times’ 100 Best Books of the 21st Century.
Discussion date/time TBD
How to Join:
To participate, simply purchase the book through Darvill’s and ask to be added to the book club list at checkout (or let them know you already bought it there). The first 15 or so readers will have seats reserved at the monthly discussion.
Come for the books, stay for the heart-to-hearts.
