The Crossroads lecture series begins its third season in September at the Orcas Center. Fall lectures begin with Ellis Goldberg speaking on “Getting it Right: Israel, Palestine, and the Obama Administration, on Friday, September 25th at 7:30 p.m.
Later in the season, James McGaugh will speak on “Memory and Emotion: The Making of Lasting Memories,” on Sunday, October 18th in the afternoon and Barbara Safriet will present “Health Care Reform: Questions and Consequences,” Friday, November 6th, at 7:30 p.m.
Future speakers in the series will be announced at a later date.
Crossroads, the island-wide lecture series, has now completed two successful years. Thanks to an initial seed grant from the Francis Bacon Foundation, Crossroads has succeeded in presenting a series of thoughtful, provocative speakers who have helped the Orcas community discuss timely issues, both local and global.
Crossroads has also received support from other donors and by individual donation for tickets. However, with the end of the Francis Bacon Foundation grant, the group presenting the lecture series must seek alternative sources of income/
Last fall Crossroads conducted a community survey on how to make the series self-supporting, while continuing to provide complimentary tickets to islanders who cannot otherwise afford them.
Based on those results, tickets for this season’s series can be purchased from Darvills for $10 each beginning in September. Season tickets will be available for $60 for tickets to all seven fall 2009-spring 2010 events. Crossroads is also providing an Associates season’s tickets program for $250 for the season with additional benefits such as special events with the speakers. Complimentary tickets will be available for those who need them two weeks before each event by signing up for them at the Senior Center.
Those who are interested in becoming an Associate, or those who have any questions regarding tickets, are asked to email crossroadslectures@gmail.com.
