||| FROM SAN JUAN COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS |||

On Thursday, December 5, the San Juan County Department of Community Development (DCD) will hold a public meeting on Shaw Island to discuss an application by San Juan County Public Works to site an Essential Public Facility on Shaw Island.

When: Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 11:30 AM

Where: Shaw Community Center, 42 Reef Net Bay Road, Shaw Island

The meeting will be attended by County staff from DCD and Public Works. Interested members of the public are invited to attend, ask questions, and learn about the application and proposal.

Summary

San Juan County’s Public Works Department has identified three potential sites currently owned by Public Works for a proposed County facility:

  1. Site A – 1385 Blind Bay Rd
  2. Site B – 1427 Neck Point Rd (North Lot)
  3. Site C – 1427 Neck Point Rd (South Lot)

The Neck Point Rd property was purchased by San Juan County in 2024. County staff held community meetings and answered frequently asked questions about the operational needs that would be met by the property. Find meeting recaps and FAQs online.

The proposed site would be used for equipment and material storage, administrative offices, and serve as an emergency service facility. All these activities meet the definition of an Essential Public Facility in San Juan County Code. The facility will support the Public Works Department in operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure on Shaw Island.

Next Steps

After the community meeting, public feedback will be included in further analysis and discussions. The Public Works Department will then present a recommendation to the County Council, along with a completed SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) checklist. The Department of Community Development will process the SEPA checklist and provide a determination to Council.

Council is expected to hold a public hearing and review the recommendations and vote in early 2025.
