Shoreline Master Program Update on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Islands
From San County Community Development and Planning
San Juan County is updating its Shoreline Master Program (SMP). Join us for a Community Summit to help shape the future of the County’s shorelines!
Why should you attend? The SMP Update will result in a plan that protects shoreline processes, promotes public access, and accommodates all appropriate shoreline uses. With over 400 miles of shoreline that is owned, used and enjoyed by residents, businesses, and visitors it’s important the community is involved in the update process.
This is the first in a series of three summits being held on the SMP update.
Summits will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on:
- March 1, 2011 @ Lopez Center for Community and Arts, 204 Village Road
- March 2, 2011 @ Orcas Center Madrona Room,917 Mount Baker Road
- March 3, 2011 @ San Juan Senior Services Center, Mullis Senior Center589 Nash Street

Why can’t we know in advance of “commenting” what new proposals or changes are being proposed before we get to these meetings? Doing the process this way just means we “comment” to each other in ways that are pretty much meaningless and then read about it later as a fait accompli.
Also, in a County where many of those who own waterfront property are older and likely to be absent in the colder winter months why not hold public comments later in the spring when they are more likely to be present? If this turns out to be the only public comment “summit” on this very important document then I also would announce it with greater notice than 10 days out. How about a quarterly calendar?
