Bids due November 1 at 3 p.m.
From Kathryn Hansen, San Juan County Parks, Recreation and Fair
County Parks is seeking bids for year-round groundskeeping services for the Eastsound Village Green. We’re encouraging contractors submitting proposals to visit the facility before submitting proposal. They can e-mail me at kathrynh@sanjuanco.com for a bid packet and proposal form.
Proposals due by 3:00pm, November 1, 2012, and we’ll accept faxed or emailed proposals. We hope to award the contract on/before Nov. 12, 2012 for work starting Jan. 1, 2013.

Can someone suggest a reason why we as taxpayers send money to Friday Harbor so County Park and Rec can “manage” the dollars (for a fee), then let a bid out on Orcas to someone local, who they are unable to directly manage (they are over there-not here) who then cleans up Village Green for Orcas taxpayers? Why not let us keep the money here in the first place and manage from here? We have a local Park and Rec. Just a thought.
Martha, my understanding is that we pay taxes to Friday Harbor to manage the Eastsound Village Green and all the other county parks we enjoy. Are you proposing that Orcas Parks and Rec undertake the maintenance of county parks on Orcas with the tax dollars currently collected by Orcas Parks & Rec?
As an alternative, I would love to see a collaboration between Orcas Parks & Rec and County Parks whereby Orcas Rec sponsors great programs at the Village Green for youth, seniors and adults–shows, concerts, yoga, volleyball, outdoor movies in the summer, etc., and County Parks maintains the property. The overhead to keep the park clean would be covered by our County Parks taxes and the overhead to run the programs would be covered by our Orcas Parks & Rec taxes.
