San Juan County’s manager, Mike Thomas, announced last November that he will be stepping down from his position after 10 years of public service in the islands. The search for a new County Manger is underway, and in the interim, the County developed a new structure to maintain efficiency and smooth operations.
The County’s Health & Community Services Director, Mark Tompkins, will serve as the Interim County Manager until the position is hired. Tompkins has been with the County since 1998 and has been an instrumental member of the organization’s leadership over his 25 years of service.
“The County is very fortunate to be able to benefit from the steady handed leadership that Mark Tompkins affords us,” said Council Chair Jane Fuller. “As he has served as Deputy County Manager for many years in support of Mike Thomas, he is well placed to step into the new structure. The County Council and staff have every confidence in his ability to do so.”
Additionally, the County’s Parks and Fair Director, Brandon Andrews, will serve as the interim Assistant County Manager. Andrews was hired in 2021 and has already worked on major County initiatives including the 32-hour work week, the Recreation, Open Space, and Stewardship Plan, and numerous capital improvement projects.
“Brandon Andrews has the full support of the County Council and staff as he steps into this interim Assistant County Manager role given his strong performance and capable managing of programming since he joined the County three years ago,” said Council Chair Fuller. “He will be well-supported by Mr. Tompkins as he takes on these additional duties for this interim period.”
Thomas’ last day with the County is February 22, 2024. San Juan County, and the County Council especially, greatly appreciate the leadership, guidance, and steadfast service our outgoing County Manager has provided over more than 10 years. His dedicated service will be missed, and we all wish him a successful future with whatever endeavors he pursues. The nation-wide search for his replacement is underway with updates to come.
