The San Juan County Council will spend Friday, June 5 in a special session, meeting with 40th District Representatives Dan Quall and Jeff Morris to discuss its legislative concerns and priorities – ranging from concerns about reliable funding for the state Ferry System to dealing with specific local needs. The meeting will convene at 10 a.m. (State Senator Kevin Ranker, a former County Council member, will not be able to attend as he is returning late from series of meetings in Washington, D.C.)
The Council will break at noon to enjoy the wood-fired pizza fair at the Friday Harbor Elementary School, then reassemble for a closed executive session concerning contract negotiations with the County Employees Union.
At 2:20 p.m. the Council will begin a budget workshop to review roughly $1 million in proposed county budget cuts which are needed to compensate for revenue shortfalls. Though the annual “County Current” budget totals nearly $14 million, because the reductions all have to take place in the second half of the budget year, the actual effect will be the equivalent of a 15% reduction in funding for activities financed by property taxes.
