Ingrid Gabriel starts work as the new San Juan County Council Clerk on Monday, returning to Friday Harbor after spending four years in Texas and obtaining her Masters degree in Legal Studies from Texas State University in San Marcos Texas.
Gabriel lived in Friday Harbor from 2003 until she returned to Texas to pursue her Masters degree in 2005. She worked for the County as a District Court Clerk and as an assistant clerk in the Prosecuting Attorney’s office.
Though she lived in Friday Harbor for a relatively short time, she has many friends on San Juan and Orcas Islands from her frequent visits that began in the early 90s. Her mother moved to Orcas eight years ago and has since relocated to the Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor.
The new Council Clerk has a 12-year-old daughter, currently enjoying YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas and looking forward to returning to school in Friday Harbor, having attended three years of elementary school here.
Most recently Gabriel served as a legal assistant and office administrator for a private law office in Austin, Texas. Her background also includes a legal internship with the Tulare County, California Family Support Service Division, and as business manager of an engineering firm in Texas.
She describes herself as a writer, swimmer and “reluctant runner.” She will fill the position left vacant by the recent departure of Ann Larson, who resigned effective June 24 to join the state senate staff of former County Councilman Kevin Ranker.
