— from Jacob Heinen for San Juan County Public Works —
It’s been two weeks since the last newsletter and much has changed down on West Beach Road.
The footings were poured Friday the 27th by Sea Island Sand & Gravel. They measure 37’ long x 5.5’ wide x 2’ tall, each weighing roughly 60,000 lbs.
The creek realignment and rockery were completed prior to pouring the footings. A second concrete pour took place this Monday to prevent the angular rock beneath the footings from spilling into the stream channel. Habitat features (cedar logs and root wads) were placed in the stream channel on Tuesday, all of which were salvaged from site during excavation.
OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Local businesses remain open with normal hours through construction. Orcas Island Pottery may be accessed via West Beach Road; both Beach Haven and West Beach Resort can be accessed via Enchanted Forest Road.
Construction of the aluminum culvert began and will be completed by the end of next week.
Looking ahead, the majority of the work left is to build the Hilfiker MSE retaining wall. A representative from Hilfiker was on site today to give advice on assembling methods as the first course was laid out.
Thanks to Mike Carlson, superintendent Brandon Baney, and all those involved in the project for their hard work.
