Orcas Issues is based on two principles:

- Adhering to the standards of American journalism: objectivity, accuracy, independence, and the identification of opinions as such
In the more than five years since its inception, Orcas Issues has grown, thanks in great part to those of you who have contributed ideas, articles, and opinions that promote the common good of civil discussion and widespread information among our community.
We now want to make it easier – and more responsible – to contribute to this news service.
Here’s how you can become an active part of the local news:
- Click on the sign-up link and then fill out and send the registration form.
- After we confirm your identity, we will email you everything you need to know to start posting news items.
- Your story will be reviewed within 24 hours by Orcas Issues Editors and then published on the site.

Why do I shop local? (Guest Opinion)
Shopping on the rock is about people on the rock. Stores, some owned by Island people, filled with island employees, helping to support island families, serving islanders. It’s an intertwining circle of support. Why wait in a long line of angry customers, grinding their teeth and glaring at the cashier, when I can wait in a short line, enjoying the camaraderie of a cashier and neighbor catching up on the news? Instead of being jostled by stressed customers, I can run into friends and play the “How do I know you?” guessing game with acquaintances. I like being treated as a person rather than a debit card holder rushed to swipe, bag, and make way for the next customer. I can get “stuff’ anywhere. It’s the people who keep me shopping in the rock.
