Retired football coach and marathoner from Orcas Island returned home from Boston Wednesday afternoon.
Dennis Dahl was just a half mile from the finish line of the Boston Marathon when the two bombs went off.
“I was just so looking forward to crossing that and saying, ‘Yeah I did this,'” Dahl said. He never got to experience that celebration, because he never crossed the finish line.
“It’s sad that something that you worked so hard for and that you want to be special,” he said. “It still is very special, but in a different light now.”

Thanks so much for sharing this. My daughter who lives in Reading , MA was back from the finish line a ways, manning an EMT station with her husband. They packed up, and headed for the finish line but didn’t get far because of the traffic.
Thank God you’re okay! I lived in Back Bay for several year, qualified & ran Boston in 1978. 3:23.13. Question: If the BAA and greater Boston raised enough funds, after making grants to victims and their families, to pay some of the transportation & lodging costs, would you run it again? Also, I’d welcome the chance to discuss it with you and your wife, over coffee in Eastsound.
