Saturday, April 22, 7:30 p.m., Orcas Center
— from Susannah Weaver —
Sharon Abreu will perform her one-woman show, “Climate Monologues,” at Orcas Center on Saturday, Apr. 22 at 7:30 p.m. In “Climate Monologues,” Abreu brings to life the stories of real people in the U.S. and around the world already impacted by the effects of climate change and people working to meet and transcend this major global challenge. Abreu tells these stories through original songs that complement the true-life experiences.
“Climate Monologues” was performed to full houses at the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival and at the United Solo Theatre Festival on Manhattan’s Theatre Row, and at Orcas Island’s Random Howse and the Grange last year.
Abreu will offer a workshop to empower people to use their voices, literally and figuratively before the Saturday night performance. The workshop will explore how we can empower our physical voices and also practice positive activism in a way that connects with others rather than creating division.
Abreu says, “In a time where we are starting to realize how important it is to connect with each other even when we don’t agree with each other on some things, this is an opportunity for people to learn some skills that will increase confidence in reaching out and using our voices in whatever constructive way they’re moved.” The workshop is on Center Stage from 5:30 to 6:30 and is free for ticket holders for “Climate Monologues.” The workshop alone is $10.
Tickets for Climate Monologues are $10 and may be purchased at www.orcascenter.org or by calling 376-2281 ext. 1 or visiting the Orcas Center Box Office open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12-2 pm. $5 subsidized tickets available at the Box Office.
