— from Michele Wiley for Sail Orcas —
This year’s theme for Opening Day [on May 4] was “Sea Life”, so whether you chose sea birds, fish, mammals, crustaceans–even an aptly named football team, fun was had by all, decorating for the parade!
Opening Day Schedule started with a Sailboat Race with a short course so that sailors would have time to dress their boats for the parade. Then the Gathering of the Fleet began south of the OIYC dock in West Sound, lining up in the customary order, were Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain Cruise, remaining power boats from longest to shortest, Fleet Captain Sail, remaining sailboats from longest to shortest.
The Opening Day Parade showed off the Club’s fleet, circling counter-clockwise to be reviewed by the Commodore and her three judges at the OIYC dock. Prizes for the best renditions of the Sea Life theme were awarded to the top three sailboats and the top three powerboats…There were some very creative vessels, so it was difficult to decide the winner!
