The Orcas Choral Society will sing “Requiem,” the final work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in April and is seeking new singers.

From the Orcas Choral Society

The Orcas Choral Society begins rehearsals for Mozart’s “Requiem” on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Madrona Room at Orcas Center.

The Choral Society’s performance of the “Requiem” will be with orchestra at Orcas Center on Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. The following Sunday afternoon, the choir has been invited to perform the same program at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. These concerts will be one of the most ambitious—and challenging—is not to be missed!

Mozart’s “Requiem” is arguably the most beloved and famous of all choral masterworks. It is also a work with an intriguing past. It was Mozart’s last work, and he died leaving parts of the piece to be completed by his students. The quality of their work, plus the discovery of a choral fugue sketch in the 1960s has led to numerous editions and versions. The Choral Society will perform a recent edition by scholar Robert Levin, which incorporates a completed version of the recently-discovered fugue as the “Amen” of the famous “Lacrymosa.”

A short audition with Artistic Director Roger Sherman is required for those wishing to join the Choral Society to sing the “Requiem” this spring. Please contact him at roger@loftrecordings.com or 376-4175 for more information.
