Mary Carol Britt of Children’s House

Orcas Island Children’s House announce the addition of Mary Carol Britt as Program Supervisor of the center’s Toddler and Preschool programs. “This is vital leadership role for us,” says Susan Anderson, Executive Director. “We’re very excited about the new ideas and unique perspective she brings to our facility.”

Mary Carol has a rich background in education, including teaching preschool through elementary grade levels. Most recently, she spent 10 years in Community Action Head Start working with 3-5 years olds as a lead teacher in several Washington County, OR schools. “Serving these children and their families taught me much about diversity and how to help children and families reach goals,” says Mary Carol.

In addition, she co-owned and operated a preschool in Portland, OR, for eight years. With a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction and an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education, she offers Children’s House extensive program experience, including hands-on experience with two critical components of the OICH programming: Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies GOLD – a comprehensive research-based assessment system that supports effective teaching and children’s development and learning through observation and documentation.

In the Program Supervisor role, Mary Carol is responsible for the development of OICH educational programs, coordination and administration of program activities and leadership of teaching staff. This fall, she will teach three mornings a week in the Preschool classroom.

While relocating from her home in Oregon is a challenge, Mary Carol and her husband already own a home on Orcas, which will ease the transition process. “Over the years, I have been drawn to the island because of its close and caring community spirit,” she says. “Now I’m looking forward to supporting Children’s House and its families as an islander myself.”

Children’s House will host an open house for families to meet Mary Carol and the staff of Children’s House in August. To learn more about the Children’s House program visit oich.org.
