It was a wonderful summer evening to formally introduce Sara Brown (and her camera) to the Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce and the community. On Wednesday, August 11th from 5-8PM, Sara, of “I’m Sara Brown Photography”, mingled about in the sunny and breezy evening on the lawn at 249 Prune Alley, in Eastsound. Around them was the aroma of food from The Kitchen and the welcoming atmosphere and flowing taps of the Barnacle.

With a hint of a circus theme, many had Brown take their picture with her bearded lady (Heather L. Smith), ate cotton candy and popcorn, and enjoyed listening to Orcas DJ Ian Bodhicypha Welch spin some smooth beats, as well as some oldies to dance to.

Brown has been a freelance photographer for 10 years, and plans to spend her summers on Orcas as a professional event and wedding photographer. She grew up in Bellingham alongside friend, Gavin Glenn-Walstrom (Asher & Olive), but her fondest memories are the times she spent as a child spending summers visiting Gavin and his family on Orcas, canoeing out on the water, and wondering where the whales were. Having lived much of her adult life all over the country, most recently NYC and New Orleans, she is now looking to make Orcas her home base for the summer wedding season on an annual basis.

As the evening drew to a close, Brown addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for coming. She communicated her aim to celebrate the unique Island community. “Orcas is special, and people come from all over the world because of how special and unique this community is. I am a better person because of this place, and I want to tell the Orcas story.” Said Brown with her camera in hand.

Brown went on to thank the various people who helped her join the community, both on a business and a personal level. Thanks to Lance Evans, Grace Grantham, Gavin Glenn, Erica Lyons, Heather L. Smith, Ian Bodhicypha Welch, Martin Taylor, Michele Wiley, Mike Buckner, and Kimaya Maitreya.
