Dr. Patricia Campbell, teaching the love of music to young ones

A workshop with its focus on “Music Education for Young Ones” will culminate a week-long residency of renowned music professor Patricia Campbell, brought to Orcas Island by the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival.

Dr. Patricia Campbell, professor at the University of Washington School of Music, is spending this week in Orcas Island preschools, working with student and teachers until Friday, April 16. She will be visiting Children’s House, Kaleidoscope, Salmonberry, and Montessori schools during the week presenting music resource materials and methods

On Saturday, April 17, Campell offers a community-wide open workshop on providing music education to young ones ages birth through seven. This is an interactive In-Service Workshop for all island educators, parents or guardians, and interested community members.

Campbell’s lifelong focus on early childhood learning and musical development in diverse cultures provides a rich context for our island educators and parents, says Victoria Parker, Executive Director of the Chamber Music Festival.

Dr. Campbell will talk about the importance and timeliness of introducing music to young ones and demonstrate methodology using age appropriate songs and chants, recordings, instruments, and music vocabulary.

The In-Service Workshop is scheduled for Saturday April 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parish Hall, Emmanuel Church in Eastsound. Registration is required. There is no tuition cost for islanders; $30 for off-island participants. Coffee and conversation begins at 9:30AM with the session starting promptly at 10AM.Bring brownbag lunch as the workshop will continue during lunch. Call the Festival Office at 376-6636 to complete the registration process. STARS Credit is available for teachers desiring continuing education hours.
