UPDATE: 5:40 p.m., April 11, 2014
The 911 outage which occurred in Washington on April 10 was not related to CenturyLink’s network, but due to a technical error by a third-party vendor. The vendor worked with our team to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
CenturyLink continues to work with the 911 centers to ensure that all issues have been resolved.

“I didn’t kill my wife. The guy I hired killed my wife.”
So we should turn a blind eye to CenturyLink’s continued record of poor service and public endangerment to the fact that they outsourced services to a company that pays their employees less so that both companies can increase their profits?
Let me add – this is yet one more reason to endorse locally controlled broadband services.
Local internet would be good, but not at the snail pace that Opalco proposes. In addition the last leg would be WiFi. This would bathe us all in needless radiation. Now I know that many of you buy into the industry paid studies that show no harm, but really. Our system of testing on the public and then correcting our mistakes (think thalidomide” is the opposite of Europe where the attitude is prove it’s safe and then we will buy in. They won’t buy our genetically modified “food” for this reason. We live buy “Profit over People” and while Opalco is a coop it basically is operating the same way. I might be willing to put up with the radiation for a minimum of 50 Mg speeds. Not for 1.5 or 3. It is not by accident that cancer has mushroomed since the 50’s with the all electric house and the proliferation of man made radiation and “food” that the label reads like a chemistry experiment. Our best shot is to “force” Century LInk to upgrade using our fibre. Don’t be naive. Remember the axiom, “Let The Buyer Beware. Google Wi Fi radiation hazards. Inform yourselves. This is a misguided adventure for rotten speeds which calls into question the misguided rational of the Board’s decisions.
I’m not much of a ranter, but every time I think of CenturyLink, I get angry. I don’t know exactly why CenturyLink is such a horrible company, though I suspect that Leif is correct that is has to do with their management.
When you add up the outages, the mistakes, no acceptance of responsibility, no acknowledgement that their service has descended into crisis territory, and certainly no plan to do anything about it, I’m frustrated to no end.
For Orcas to thrive as a community in the 21st century, we need strong, fast, reliable telecommunications infrastructure. Without it, businesses and telecommuters will not locate here, and our island economy will rely only on tourism and retirees. I love tourism and retirees, please don’t get me wrong, I just want the economy to be more diverse.
I’m a huge supporter of OPALCO broadband, and I can’t wait to fire CenturyLink.
