A vehicle aboard the Yakima caught fire as the boat was leaving the Orcas dock toward Shaw at approximately 12:20 p.m. today. The vehicle was on the second level of the ferry, and could have potentially become quite serious.
Orcas firefighter and EMT Cameron Fralick became aware of the fire a few cars behind him. He immediately took action and disconnected the battery while the ferry crew assembled their crew.
The fire was successfully extinguished by the ferry crew. The vehicle and the boat continued on the route to Anacortes, where the vehicle will be off-loaded.
There were no injuries reported, and the fire was contained to only one vehicle.
