An Orcas Elementary student was involved in an accident at the intersection of North Beach and School Roads on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The student was struck by a car while riding his bike through the intersection. Orcas Island Elementary/Middle School Principal Kyle Freeman said, “Thankfully this was a low speed accident. The student was very lucky to escape the accident with only minor injuries and was released to the Funhouse to wait for his father following an examination by paramedics and a local doctor.

“The response of our fire and police departments was amazing and it was impressive to see so many community members respond to the aid of a student.”

Community members have suggested school traffic patrols and clearly designated bike lanes in order to prevent future accidents.
