A tragic boating accident near Sucia Island killed a Canadian woman on Monday, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The incident happened on Feb. 3, when a 31-foot sailboat ran aground on Ewing Island, located on the northeast side of Sucia Island.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that the boat began taking on water and sinking, forcing the man and woman on board into the water.
A small USCG boat and a helicopter from Coast Guard Station Port Angeles after receiving a distress call from the area of Lummi Bay.
The man was rescued and taken aboard the Coast Guard small boat, but the woman was found unresponsive, floating face down in the water.
